Elementary

Today I spent approximately fifteen minutes debating a fellow graduate student about whether or not we can safely affirm that Sherlock Holmes has exactly two nostrils. You will be glad to hear that I was on the side of right - shoulder to shoulder with those who strike their chests and shout "RUBBISH!" when someone asserts that Sherlock Holmes, for all we know, had three nostrils. And we scoff at the medievals with their angels and pinheads.

Here's the Macbeth passage I was thinking of earlier:

(1.7.55) I have given suck and know
how tender 'tis to love the babe that milks me ...

Though I believe that is the only reference in the play to Lady Macbeth having children. I believe there is speculation that they may have had a child that died. Or maybe it had 3 nostrils so they got rid of it. Who konws?

Yes! I do remember this passage now. Thanks so much for that bit of excavating from The Bethany Mind!

Oh, this also allows us to affirm, at last, that the Son of Beth bore the equipage suitable to his sex.
